I reread The Night Circus and remembered why I loved it so much. Dr. Carnes said he didn't like it, but I think he was lying. Or we just have different taste (which I would not be surprised about). Ohhhhh my gosh. The sensory writing, the switches between perspectives. I wrote a huge paper breaking down Morgenstern's grammatical style and I'm quite proud of it. I have emulated her writing style before, but the deep dive helped me to understand the methodology behind it even more.
I focused on Morganstern's implementation of sensory writing and how much depth it brings into her stories, how immersive they feel. Scents and sounds really bring me into a story and I love the feeling of being lost in a book. I also broke down her use of simple sentences. She consistency uses compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences to explain things, and her simple sentences that follow have a much greater impact.
Then I spent some time on her use of third person limited POVs. I love me a third person story. I feel juvenile sometimes when I read novels that just go, "I...I...I..." So I appreciate the slight distance but also enjoy getting to know the character's mind. There are at least seven perspectives in this book and one is a second-person address. Every one of these chapters places the reader in one of the magical tents within the circus and details the experience vividly.
I really just love this book.
Go read it.
